Dear Skålleagues,
As we wrap up another fantastic World Congress, I am filled with gratitude and immense pride for yet another strong attendance by our Oceania region. This year, we had 31 Australian and 3 New Zealand delegates representing 13 clubs, coming together to celebrate Skål in Izmir, Türkiye.
The congress kicked off with a vibrant Get-Together Party at the Izmir Historical Coal Gas Factory, a remarkable venue that beautifully marries industrial heritage with modern cultural expression. Under the open sky, we danced to live DJ performances, reconnecting with familiar faces and forging new friendships - a true testament to the spirit of unity that defines our organisation.
The highly anticipated Opening Ceremony took place at the Ahmet Adnan Saygun Art Center, where we witnessed Executive Board members proudly carrying their country’s flags for the first time, and of course Denise Scrafton proudly waved the Aussie flag as did Bruce Garrett for New Zealand. The ANZAC spirit filled the auditorium as I'm sure you can imagine!
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia for being the runner-up in the Sustainable Tourism Awards in the Major Tourist Attraction category, and to Skål Christchurch for their third-place finish in the International Skål Club of the Year. As a Rising Skål Leader award recipient in 2023, it was particularly rewarding to see Moritz Freise, President of Skål International Berlin, recognised in 2024. Moritz is a true asset to Skål, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him at the congress. Additionally, a round of applause goes to Rosario González de Dellien from Skål International Cochabamba, awarded International Skålleague of the Year. Following the Opening Ceremony, we enjoyed a scenic lunch at Urla Sahne, where the breath-taking views complemented the delicious Turkish cuisine.
The Annual General Assembly was a highlight, featuring many very productive discussions on important association matters, largely the on-going website and membership challenges, and the announcement of future World Congress hosts - Skål International Cusco, Peru, in 2025, and Skål International Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, in 2026. Start planning!
The congress also introduced the Global Market Place, B2B sessions, and insightful workshops. Attendees engaged in meaningful exchanges with local and global businesses, getting to know our fellow industry colleagues and fostering new opportunities. Keynote speaker Kamel Badawy delivered an enlightening address on 'The Importance of Sports and Medical Tourism,' followed by panels tackling critical industry issues, including AI, sustainability, and membership development.
At the Gala Dinner, we celebrated tradition with the chain ceremony, honoring the newly elected Vice President and Directors, and witnessing the very exciting handover to our incoming World President, Denise Scrafton - a truly special moment. We were very excited to be supporting and cheering for Denise as we celebrated an incredible achievement for Skål Australia and for our Oceania region. We certainly wish Denise all the very best in her new role and I have no doubt she will be an exceptional World President and ambassador for Skål.
The 83rd Skål International World Congress in Izmir was another comprehensive, fun and successful congress. It is clear that our World Congresses continue to capture the essence of Skål through friendship, professional growth, and cultural appreciation. To those who joined us, thank you for being part of this incredible experience. For those unable to attend, we warmly invite you to consider attending future congresses to embrace the spirit of Skål International and the unity of 'Doing Business Among Friends" that connects us all.
Thank you to our Australian and New Zealand delegates for your participation. Congresses are vital for networking, experiencing diverse cultures, creating business opportunities, and forging new friendships, and we most certainly did that!
We now shift our focus to our upcoming Australian AGM & 111th National Assembly in my beautiful hometown of Broome - the western gateway to the stunning Kimberley region and the pearling capital of Australia. Broome needs no introduction, a breath-taking destination renowned for its stunning sunsets over Cable Beach, beautiful beaches, unique red cliffs and vibrant multicultural heritage, making it a captivating paradise to host our next national event.
We invite you to join us for what will be an incredible weekend that promises both inspiring discussions and unforgettable experiences amidst the natural beauty and rich history of Australia's Northwest.
Looking forward to seeing you all again in Broome!
Yours in Skål,
Ash Munn
