Dear Skålleagues

This month, I’d love to share with you a fantastic example of collaboration between Skål and the greater industry from our friends in Perth!

Skål Perth is launching an exciting new initiative in 2025, SKIWA, aimed at mentoring and empowering young professionals and students in Western Australia’s hospitality, tourism/travel and events industries. SKIWA is a 6-month program designed to provide the tools and confidence for young talent to thrive in their burgeoning careers, while also offering seasoned professionals the chance to share their knowledge and expertise to help shape the future of our industry.

The concept for the program was developed by the dedicated Skål Perth Committee, led by President Michael Collins. I caught up with Michael recently and he shared how the vision for SKIWA is aligned with the Committee’s overall vision - to go beyond simple networking and create an avenue to give back to the community while focusing on the next generation of Skål. The program aims to rejig perceptions around the industry, encouraging younger people to see the hospitality/tourism sector as a respected and viable career path, one with real opportunities for growth, excellence and professional and personal satisfaction.

To bring this vision to life, Skål Perth have partnered with Tourism WA, solidifying a relationship that began to take shape when Perth hosted the Skål Australia 109th National Assembly in March last year.  Tourism WA’s support, alongside collaboration with key industry suppliers (like hotel venues), has been instrumental in ensuring the program’s launch is accomplished and establishing the path to long-term sustainability.

SKIWA provides a structured roadmap for students and industry newcomers to develop the essential skills for success. The program consists of six group sessions featuring workshops and guest speakers, covering topics such as emotional intelligence, the power of connection, service excellence, and practical skills application. Mentees will also benefit from post-graduation support, including job hunting assistance and networking opportunities within our wonderful Skål community.

SKIWA is open to aspiring professionals aged 18-32, with the inaugural session set to begin this March. There are still a few spots available for mentees so please reach out if you know someone who may be a good fit (must be current WA residents).  More details can be found at: www.skiwa.com.au.

A huge thank you to President Michael and the Skål Perth Committee for their dedication and innovation, a brilliant example of the Skål spirit in action. There will be plenty of representation from Skål Perth at our upcoming National Assembly in Broome – and I’m sure the team won’t mind answering questions from fellow clubs that may be inspired to do something similar!

Yours in Skål,
